What this number is, and what it is not

It is an indicative supply-and-install band for the wall itself, based on published south-east Queensland material rates. It is not a quote, not a fixed price, and not a total project cost. It does not price excavation, spoil removal, drainage, backfill, engineering, approval fees, landscaping, fencing or GST, and it cannot see your site.

The formula

Face area = height in metres times length in metres. That area is multiplied by the low and high ends of the material band to give the range, then multiplied by an access factor of 1.0, 1.2 or 1.45 depending on whether a machine can reach the wall line. Nothing else is added or assumed.

Where the numbers come from

The per-square-metre bands are the indicative south-east Queensland installed rates recorded in our niche reference for 2025 to 2026: timber sleeper $300 to $450, segmental block $400 to $650, concrete sleeper $550 to $700, besser or core-filled block $550 to $750, rock and boulder $150 to $300, gabion $250 to $430, all per square metre of wall face and all indicative. They are drawn from published south-east Queensland supplier and landscaping price guides, not from a survey of quotes. The access factors are a stated allowance, not a published figure, and are shown so you can see exactly what they do. The assumption set

The model assumes one straight wall run of even height, stable ground that does not need special footings, no rock in the excavation, no services to relocate, and normal working hours. Steps, corners, curves, terracing, tiered walls and reactive clay all move the price and none of them are modelled here.

Costs shown are indicative only and based on wall face area. They exclude GST, excavation, drainage, backfill, engineering and difficult access. Reactive clay, steep blocks and surcharge loads can change the price materially. Ask for a written fixed-price quote before you commit to anything.

What moves the price most on retaining walls for sloping blocks

Height moves it more than anything else, and not in a straight line. Once the wall plus retained fill passes 1.0 metre above natural ground level, or once it carries a surcharge at any height, building approval applies and the wall generally needs structural design to AS 4678 by an RPEQ engineer, certified on a Form 15. That adds a design cost, an approval cost and usually a heavier footing, and it is why quotes either side of that line look so different.

Excavation is the next biggest mover. Cutting into a Brisbane ridge can add roughly $400 to $1,500 or more on its own, indicatively, before anyone touches the wall. Drainage is a separate line again: an agi pipe, a perforated drainage pipe running along the base of the wall, sitting in graded gravel and wrapped away from the clay with geofabric. It is mandatory under the Queensland Development Code and it is almost never inside a headline per-square-metre rate. If you want to compare two quotes honestly, check both of those are itemised, then for the wall you actually have.

Access decides the rest. A machine that can reach the wall line changes the labour hours completely against a site where every sleeper and every barrow of gravel is carried down a side path. On the tighter inner-west blocks that difference is often larger than the difference between two materials. How much does a retaining wall cost in Brisbane?
Cost tracks wall face area, material and site conditions rather than a flat job price. As an indicative guide, timber sleeper walls sit around $300 to $450 per square metre installed and concrete sleeper or core-filled block around $550 to $750, before excavation, drainage, backfill, engineering and access allowances. A small garden terrace can land in the low thousands while an engineered wall on a steep block runs well past that, so the useful number is a written fixed-price quote.
How much does a 10m retaining wall cost in Brisbane?
A 10-metre retaining wall at around 1m high is often quoted in the low thousands for a basic residential job. Brisbane examples commonly fall around $2,500 to $7,000 for a standard wall, but site conditions can push that higher.
Do I need council approval for a retaining wall in Brisbane?
You generally do not need building approval if the wall and retained fill or cut are no more than 1 metre high, it is at least 1.5 metres from a building or another retaining wall, and it does not carry surcharge loading or form part of pool fencing. If it does not meet those conditions, a building application is usually required.
Do I need engineering for a retaining wall in Brisbane?
In Brisbane the building-approval line is 1 metre, not 1.5 metres. A wall that needs building approval (over 1 metre including retained fill or cut, carrying a surcharge at any height, within 1.5 metres of a building or another retaining wall, or forming part of a pool barrier) generally needs structural design to AS 4678 by an RPEQ engineer, certified on a Form 15 (Form 16 is the building certifier's inspection certificate and Form 12 covers installer or aspect certification). Some engineers also treat walls above roughly 800mm as engineered structures, but that is engineering practice rather than the council threshold.
What is the cheapest type of retaining wall?
Treated timber sleeper walls are usually among the cheaper options for standard residential jobs. Concrete sleeper, block, sandstone, and decorative systems generally cost more, especially when height and engineering requirements increase.
